SHROPSHIRE COUNCIL HIGHWAYS - Response to Lushcott Lane enquiries:
Dear Mr Green,
Thank you for your email, which has been forwarded to me for response. We are aware of the condition of Lushcott Lane and the location has been highlighted as a site of local engineering concern requiring future capital investment. However, due to current funding and the general condition of the highway network across the county, we cannot currently commit to a date for when these works may be implemented. In the meantime, until more substantial works can be undertaken, a Job is in the system to repair the edge break, which is being chased up with our contractor, and there is a job in the system to reinstate the sign.
The condition of the network within your Parish is not unique within Shropshire, or indeed across the country with almost all highway authorities struggling to keep on top of defects and the pace of deterioration, with pothole numbers significantly rising year on year which has been exacerbated in Shropshire by recent poor winters and flooding which has severely stretched resources. We recorded over 34,000 potholes/carriageway defects in 2024, which is a 59% increase since 2020, which places huge pressure on budgets and resources.
We do recognise the serious impact that highway maintenance has on its communities and businesses and as a result committed additional funding to try and mitigate the rate of deterioration. We have recently had an announcement from the Department for Transport which should see additional funding land next financial year, which will help with strategic investment in the network.
Until more substantial capital works can be undertaken, Shropshire Council will continue to undertake routine safety inspections, whereby notifiable defects are recorded and scheduled for repair. As well as ensuring that the carriageway is kept in as safe a condition as possible, this process of recording highway condition data, feeds into our asset management system of identifying and prioritising carriageway improvements.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention and for future reference, all concerns requiring investigation should be reported via the Shropshire Council Website using this link https://shropshire.gov.uk/roads-and-highways/report-a-highways-fault-or-concern/ or via the FixMyStreet Mobile Phone APP.
This is the most timely and effective way to report issues to Shropshire Council and ensures that all enquiries are logged and recorded in our system, confirmation and a reference number is provided, and the enquiry is allocated to the appropriate service area and officer, with exact location of concern, for investigation and action. This process also prevents any unnecessary delay with correspondence being allocated to the correct department and officer at Shropshire Council.
Shropshire Council are actively working to improve customer engagement and the process of recording all highway condition data is vital to the service and feeds into our asset management system of identifying and prioritising carriageway improvements.
Kind regards,
Andrew Keyland
Highway Maintenance Manager
